about the piece
description
Nun danket alle Gott, BWV 79, is a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach that was composed in Leipzig in 1730. The cantata is a classic example of the kind of hymn of thanksgiving and praise that was often performed in churches on festive occasions in the Baroque era, especially at harvest festivals or other celebrations.
Bach originally composed ‘Nun danket alle Gott’ for a festive occasion, probably in connection with a harvest service. The text was written by Martin Rinkart, a German pastor and poet, who composed the poem in 1636. It was first sung as a chorale in a church service in 1636, with Rinkart creating his own musical version of the song as a hymn.
For Bach's cantata, however, the text was inserted into a liturgical structure that divided the thanks to God into different musical movements, each of which had its own function, be it as an aria, recitative or chorus.
