Variations on a Japanese Song
was commissioned by the OrigAmi euphonium quartet of Japan and first performed in 2022.
“In my music, I was trying to capture my own personal emotions I experience when deeply absorbing the beauty of the Japanese nature, the culture and its spirit. The melody on which my “Japanese song” and indeed the variations are based on, stems from my own imagination. The work can also be seen as a personal tribute to the profound richness and simple beauty of Japanese Folksongs – an art form which has left a deep impression on me. There are also some episodes of humor and light-heartedness – they also reflect my personal experiences when traveling through Japan as a tourist.
